In the comments to my previous entry, Knitting Goddess #9 asked about Pug and her lack of eye. Since the Knitting Goddess is probably not the only person wondering what the story is, I am posting the reply I sent to her:

It is not you — she only has one eye! as a matter of fact, my other little dog a shih-tzu also only has one eye!!

I am not an eye popping monster with some kind of sick and twisted Cyclops dream. There are perfectly reasonable explanations for this.

When we got our pug as a puppy, the vet told us that dogs with smushed in snouts were prone to having eye troubles because their eyes don’t sit as deeply in the socket. Sure enough, she was messing around out back, whacked her head on our picnic table and off to the vet we went. Lots of $$ and surgery later (trying to save the eye), the vet just took it out, she had no vision in it and it would be prone to infection.

Which brings me to the other one eyed dog, Mo. He is a demon bastard whom I love beyond all reason – demon bastard dogs and the foolish middle aged women who love them. He only male dog in the group and he seems to have a Napoleonic personality disorder. Last summer he decided to pick a fight with our 80 some pound chow-mix Bridget. (btw, Mo tops the scales at 13 pounds). Much to his surprise, he lost. And he lost in a big way – broken jaw, numerous puncture wounds and a detached retina.

As most of my vet stories end – Lots of $$ and surgery later, the vet just took it out, he had no vision in it and it would be prone to infection.

Ps. MO ended up seeing a pet opthamologist (I didn’t know such beings existed), who is on the board at the Bronx Zoo. We paid extra for that.
