Vous êtes très gentille

  • Giselle
  • Monique — this smacks of porn star and was immediately sneered at and discounted.
  • Amelie — it got two votes – although I have more in common with the little gnome than I do Audrey Tautou
  • Josse
  • Jacqueline
  • Madeline — too little girl, too many straight lines
  • Angelique — also a little porn star, non?   sorry Vicki! were you a dirty-run-around in high school??
  • Annick — put forth by many friends who said that Ann was indeed a French name, but if I insisted on something different then how about Annick?
    • maybe I should just call myself Juliette Binoche and get it over with …

      1. In high school french, we all had frenchified names that we had to use in class. Mine had to be Jeanne, as it was closest to Joanne. My best pal got to be Chantal, because there was no close translation of Karen.
We had many Maries, and there were also: Helene and Therese (avec deux accents), Elise, Bernadette, Celine, Fleur, Aimee, Cosette, Josette, Margeuerite,Marianne,Nathalie, and Nicolette…, and my personal favorite for mature elegance would be Genevieve with the true french pronunciation (JONveeEV)

      2. Heh, I had to run around just to watch that show as my mom wasn’t too keen on it! I’m the eldest, I got a lot of “protection.”

You need an extra “e” — Madeleine (like my girl’s!). And similar to JONveeEV, the french pronunciation (which sounds a little more grown up, in my opinion) is more like madLANE.
