I am sure this happens to everyone, and very likely more often than we care to admit! You run into someone you used to know. You cannot quite place their face and the details of their lives are somewhat fuzzy. Still, you must talk to this person.

Hey — How’ve you been?
You look terrific!

Are you still doing the lawyer thing?
Oh, yeah, I meant doctor thing — you were always so smart, I knew it was one or the other.

How is Fred? Oh, sorry!! I don’t know where I got Fred from, of course I remember your husband Dan!

My memory is like a sieve these days. But I tell you what, I will never forget all the wild times we had during Spring Break!! God, those were some fun times.

What?

Are you sure?

I could swear it was you that was with us — are you sure?! Then who was that?? Wow! I must really be losing my mind!

So it was with me and The Vest. I took it out of hiding today and began the akward you-used-to-be-the-love-of-my-life-and-now-I-hardly-remember you dance. Is this a button band? — what is that, the swatch or the pocket lining? That can’t be the armhole band — it’s too short….

I do believe that once we both get over our initial shyness, things are going to be just fine with me and Vest. He really is such a sweet guy – don’t know why I ever dumped him. fickle girl. All he really needs is for me to boss him around a bit (blocking!!) and everything will be okay. sigh.

the letter that will never be read

we interrupt your regular programming schedule while Purlingswine performs a cathartic primal scream ….

Dear _____,

I am writing to inform you it is time to grow up.

It is time to start counting your blessings of which you have many.

It is time to let go of grievances – real and imagined. They are bringing you down – and I don’t mean in that ‘depressed’ way. I mean they are making you less human.

You will become the object of your focus. I believe that if you don’t make a drastic change, you will be an old woman still bitching about her childhood and what so-and-so said, and what they didn’t do and how they didn’t love you enough.

No one likes a belly acher. It is an annoying trait in childhood and is downright unattractive in adults. You can do better than this.

You are your own creation.

Sincerely,
Ann
