Sure – she made me feel inadequate. Yes – she was leaps ahead. Everything seemed so glossy and perfect. She had staff. She seemed distant, cold, imperious – one could say she had a brutal quality.
But I admire her. She made me want to try new things. She inspired me – some of her ideas sparked other ideas in me. She gave me the world’s best macaroni & cheese recipe. Her show is beautiful and her magazines are sublime. Her pursuit of perfection awed me. I did sometimes hold that perfection against her – mostly as a way to excuse myself. “of course Martha’s linens are ironed and her garden tools are sharpened – she has staff“. I was really hung up on the whole staff thing – in kinder moments, I told myself she didn’t always have staff and I suspect that even then her linens were ironed and her shears razor sharp.
Of course, I hear she is hell on wheels. She’s a world class b*tch.
I am her consumer not her girlfriend. How many male CEOs are analyzed this way? Is it because her name is her brand? Why do we care so much what she is like? Does it make any difference? Should we not mulch our gardens just because Martha is a so-and-so?
So now what?
I have only superficially followed this case. I would have paid more attention if I thought it would turn out this way. She has been convicted of a number of things. One is Obstruction of Justice – Lying to Federal Investigators. She is facing prison time. How is it that President Clinton perjured himself on the stand and didn’t face such consequence? If memory serves, he wasn’t even disbarred. I truly do not understand how a lie told one way is viewed differently than any other.
