I have experienced my own little knitting miracle! I wasn’t holding out much hope that this hat was going to felt properly. The last I posted about it, I had it on one of the dogs!! Now, if Lucy wants to wear it, she’s gonna have to fight me for it!

I had so little faith that all was going to turn out for the Bucket-o-Chic, that after attempting to felt it by hand in the kitchen sink, I got fed up and threw it in the washing machine. Remember that I have a front loading washer and cannot fish things out once the cycle starts. But lo and behold it emerged beautifully!! This is one terrific pattern and I have already started my next one!

swatch soup

washer.bmpare you wondering why I was fulling my swatch in the kitchen sink rather than in the washing machine like most knitters? I have recently become the proud owner of a front loading washer. I love this washer, it is marvelous – efficient & quiet, and it looks great! Unlike a top loader you cannot interrupt the washing cycle whenever you want to — this would lead to flooding, mopping and a gnashing of teeth. As my patience came to an end (aren’t knitters supposed to be wonderfully patient people?) and I threw the swatch into the mixer it occurred to me that I will not be able to do this with the entire garment. So I am relegated to the sink, wondering if I should buy a washboard.

Step 1. Make Swatch
Step 2. begin felting
Step 3. become impatient and throw it all in the mixer
Step 4. when that doesn’t work, wring it’s neck
Step 5. feel ‘full-ed’
