I am Hoke Coburn

Remember those kids in school that you knew your mother wouldn’t want you to hang around with? Do you think having a friend with a suspended license would qualify?

A few months ago, my good friend was ticketed in Manhattan for having a tinted rear window in her car. Please note that this ‘tint’ was an option given by the car company (Land Rover) and not an after market add on. This friend is a very busy lady, with an exciting career and a full family life – paying the ticket slipped her mind. That is, until yesterday when she got a letter in the mail informing her that her license was now suspended!

Who amongst us doesn’t love the DMV? This friend spent 45 minutes dutifully waiting in line at the DMV for her number to be called. She was then informed that she couldn’t pay her fine at that location. This all happened at 4:00 pm, so getting to another DMV before they closed was impossible. This type of fine is also something that cannot be taken care of online. It cannot be resolved until Monday. After so many years of driving, it is difficult to be a pedestrian.

So it happens that I spent my day with an outlaw – one on the fringes of society – one that would have parents shaking their heads – one who no doubt pulls those tags off of mattresses under penalty of law! She is a scoff law … perhaps even an anarchist! I played the Morgan Freeman to her Jessica Tandy.

She was Miss Daisy – I was Hoke. I am just glad that she deigned to sit up front

  1. Hi. I found your blog on Weblogs.com and I’ve been reading it for a while. I just thought I would share a little window tint anecdote. It didn’t happen to me, but a former co-worker. She had her car’s windows tinted in our state where it’s legal. But she went on vacation in Virginia and as she was driving through the state, she was ticketed for her tint being too dark. I thought that was a ripoff and probably not even a legal ticketing since here car wasn’t registered in that state. Probably some new twist on the old ‘speedtrap’ moneymaking scheme.

  2. We spent a great deal of time talking about this crazy ticket — why would a manufacturer offer this option if it is illegal?? She really should have fought this ticket, but now she just wants her license back.

  3. Ann thats terrible! she should ask landrover for compensation. It reminds me of my baby powder story( in some loopy nonsensical way)I will save it for our next visit!
