I am woman hear me roar …

I need you to do me a favor. Many weeks ago I came upon this link for the Gender Genie. Everytime I do this thing, it tells me I am a male. Every single time. I have tried it with many different texts to no avail. I am beginning to doubt myself – it is so insistent!

So please, have a go at this yourself and we can get a group rate on our therapy appointments.

  1. I’ve been graded “male” several times, though I am NOT, thank you. It must be weighted on the content. Do we not discuss enough stereotypical feminine issues, like panty hose runs and cuticle remover?

  2. Thanks for the link. I don’t think you should personalize the results, since they are based on the written works of various writers, not anything that validates their sexuality or gender.

The algorhythm is based on these questionable assumptions: Female writers use more pronouns (I, you, she, their, myself), say the program’s developers, Moshe Koppel of Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel, and colleagues. Males prefer words that identify or determine nouns (a, the, that) and words that quantify them (one, two, more).

That assumes that guys talk about objects, girls talk about relationships. What about geeks? They are always discussing the relationships of objects.

I think this is another technology plaything, useful only for blogfodder.

  3. Hi Ann – I got male several times too. The inaccuracy rate is about 35%, according to their stats. Well, since we know from The Guardian article that our activities are only valuable if we are male, I suppose we should be flattered?
