girlie men

I know that I have posted one too many entries regarding fruit caps for children. I am sick of the subject myself. However, I must add a few more cents on the topic.

1. Remember my prediction? My friend would be asked to knit a bushel and a peck of fruit caps once the other ladies at the baby shower saw the one I knit for her to present as being made by her?? Do you remember my smug self-certainty?

Once again smug self certainty has bitten me in the ass. Rarely, if ever, does it serve me well.

My dearest cousin is a reader of my site. She was overwhelmed by the cuteness of the pumpkin hat. She could hardly believe her eyes! She has asked me to knit one for her boy.

So this weekend was spent churning out another fruit hat. This brings my grand total to four. That is four caps in two months!

This cousin is artistically inclined and has agreed to design an original Christmas Stocking graphic in exchange for the hat. (I think I have gotten the better end of the deal!)

2. I am taking a poll. How many of you out there think that the pumpkin hat is ‘girlie’? Leave a comment – is it a girl/boy/or either type of hat?

And there you have it. Hopefully my last two cents on the fascinating subject of Fruit Caps for Children.

  1. I think anything that could be called a “Fruit Cap” would not be welcomed on a little boy’s head (at least in *my* family of cavemen)… Pumpkin is tricky though, technically a gourd and all… to be safe I would say not for a boy. Now, and acorn! That sounds boyish. Or if you could swing it, a coney-island hot dog hat.

  2. I’m a firm believer that the pumpkin is a Uni-Fruit. I have seen little boys and girls dressed as pumpkins for Halloween, thus supporting my belief.
You could modify the pattern a bit to make it a true gourd; kind of a funnel-y shaped top, rather than a round top.

  3. Obviously my vote is that the pumpkin cap is unisex! Please don’t make the cap into the shape of a funnel. I love the round cap it is too cute!!! Seeing that my little pumpkin’s head is very round and any other shape would look deformed on him! LOL I will have to take a photo of this pumpkin hat master piece on my little guy; to put an end to any arguements that it isn’t boyish. Owen is all boy. I am sure he is going to look adorable! Thanks Favorite Cousin! Love Jane

  4. this is bro (husband of sil) trying to figure out why my lovely bride hasn’t been able to post comments recently. something about too much spam on our computer. well if this makes it through, it means we’re back up and running here.

ps> i think that if the kids could talk, either type might be a bit embarrassed to be seen wearing pumpkins or fruit. but then again, its all about what the mom’s want anyway, isn’t it? and they’re just so cute – who can resist!!

  5. Wow, your family actually reads your blog? I keep my family out of my part of the blogosphere. My older son recently started a blog, of course I read it multiple times per day. The poor kid was actually marvelling at how much traffic he was getting with no comments being posted. HELLO! Your mother works online all day, figure it out, boy.

  6. Pumpkin heads! Male of course. Acutally pumpkins are cute and would work either way. Any baby male or female would be darling in a fruit hat. Babies are babies!

  8. Pumpkin heads are MALE! Well, actually they are so cute that either gender can wear them. All fruit hats are cute and babies are babies so they can wear all hats.

  9. Now it seems the question isn’t whether the pumpkin hat can be worn by a boy, but at what age. I see most feel it’s for a baby. Owen turns 3 this Sept. Not quite a baby anymore but still very much a little boy. My wise cousin hit the nail on the head when he said “It’s all about what mom’s want anyway” So you can be sure Owen will be wearing that pumpkin hat maybe all the way until he is 18! LOL If he ends up in therapy he can blame the pumpkin hat his mom made him wear!

  10. The pumpkin cap is defintely fine for a boy. I would let either of my sons wear one and I can be a bit picky about that (since my youngest has a head of curls and is often mistaken for a girl I can be quite sensitive, it happened to his brother when he was 2 also).
