chevron baby cardigan and hat

It is not all about the bacon around here.  There has been some knitting going on!  This is a baby set I made for a friend’s baby shower.  She doesn’t know if she is having a girl or boy and I thought that this pattern and yarn were gender neutral.

pattern:  Chevron Baby Cardigan & Hat from the Nashua Bloom book.

yarn:  Cascade 220 superwash

The booties are a pattern I found on Ravelry.  It is the Magic Slipper pattern and I followed TinkerTots directions for some design mods.

Makin Bacon

When Vicki was here somehow the subject of bacon came up. it’s funny how that can happen. I think we were having breakfast and I mentioned that Boar’s Head pre-cooked bacon is really not that bad. Not as good as on the stove fresh, but very convenient. Then Vicki told me about this funny little microwave bacon cooker that the girls had bought Rusty one Christmas.

and then we went on with our day.

and then the Thank You for the Wonderful Visit present arrived on my front porch. In amongst many wonderful things was Makin Bacon. Vicki oh Vicki ……..

Can I just say that it has been so freaking long since I’ve posted that my browser bar did not “recognize” my domain name and I had to type the whole thing in?!  I suppose I should be thankful that my site isn’t covered in dust and spider webs.

The best way for me to get back into the blogging groove is to go with a list format.  I am feeling short and to the point these days with no time for lots of adjectives and exclamation points.

Let’s see, since I have been here last the following things have been going on ….

  • I had a fun filled slumber party with Cara & Kay.  Highlights include a hard fought scrabble game chock full of belly aching and laughs (can you guess who was doing the belly aching?? hint: not me and not Kay), a trip to a quilt show and the final perfect thing?  deep fried tater tots!! It was a lovely visit and Kay is the Perfect Hostess.
  • I had a fibery get-together in my own back yard.  Kathleen, Cara, Peggy, Nancy, Chante, Maribel and their wonderful families all came over for a bbq.  We had a great time eating, playing bocce and spinning while the kids and husbands enjoyed the pool and hammock.  The weather was perfect and it was a great day.
  • I have been on two yarn shop crawls in Brooklyn.  On top of finding some great yarn shops, I was directed to a fantastic place to eat — Ferdinando’s.  For this place I will certainly work up some exlamatory energy.  OMG!!!!!!!!!  you simply must go there if you are ever in the area.  Plus those yarn shops are great too!
  • my knitting such as it is has been not very exciting at all.  I am working on some socks which are lovely, but I cannot seem to get worked up over.  I just completed a sample piece for the shop and I need to put my nose to the grindstone for that Magpie sweater.  I also need to get something on the needles for a baby shower gift.  But honestly I am feeling very bleh about all of it.  After I post here I am headed over to Ravelry, all things knitting can be found over there.
  • Mr. Boar is still hard at work on the deck.  If the weather cooperates this weekend he may be putting the finishing touches on the project by building a new table.  It really has come out beautifully.
  • I am beginning a few house projects of my own and first on the list is painting D#1’s room.  I plan on prepping things in there today and hope to have a brush in my hand on Friday.
  • just this morning Virginia told me about a new knitting site — Popknits!  check it out, it looks great!

ps.  for someone who claims to be all meh. I seem to have used the word great a lot.  I am a riddle rapped in a mystery.  or a shrimp wrapped in bacon.

a little spinning?

Although the needles have not been flying, the wheel has been going round and round! I even brought the Lendrum out on the deck for a bit of alfresco spinning.

Once again I find myself making vows … vows to spin more, to keep track of what the hell is on the wheel and to simply try to stick with it and pay attention.  Toward this end I even started a spinning notebook – hopefully writing everything down will help to keep track of the details.  Wish me luck!

First up is some Blue Faced Leicester that was bought at Rhinebeck 2007. I decided to leave this as singles to maxamize yardage, with the idea of knitting a lacy shawl.  Although I have knit with my handspun, I have not yet managed a significant project.

Next is some SW Merino that was given to me by Christine of Now and Zen. Christine is in my Spinning Guild and has a wonderful yarn shop on the east end in Greenport. I need to ask her what the SW stands for. This fiber spun like a dream. Really lovely to work with.   I ended up with 96 yards because I Navajo plyed it — in retrospect, I wonder if I should have simply done a two ply to have more yardage. Anyway, I have a few hat or scarf patterns in my Ravelry favorites that would look great knit up with this.

I am sure some of you are wondering what became of the yarn that was in my freezer …… the project did two days in the freezer, one day defrosting and another 24 hours back in and there are NO SIGNS of LIFE! I am beginning to think that perhaps it wasn’t the yarn at all and simply the holes in my window screens. Now I have to get to knitting it to give this story a truly happy ending!
