The Grandma Mabel Memorial Recipe Box Show & Tell Contest

Ann & Kay are having a contest!

My recipe box came from my mother’s house. Since counter space was at a premium, it used to sit on top of the fridge. My mother loved to collect things – antiques were high on her list followed by cookbooks and recipes. (I know, the apple didn’t fall far!)

At some point in the late 70’s, she got her hands on this two drawer portion of a library card catalog and moved all of her recipe cards from the more typical recipe box into this.

I am sharing one of my Grandmother’s recipes for Chocolate Chip Coffee Ring – it’s a keeper!

Christmas 2007

Our Christmas was different this year. We were on our own for the first time ever. Out of town company decided against traveling and my MiL was MIA in Florida, visiting with Boar’s sister. So it was just the four of us!

We decided to start some new traditions – after a morning of opening presents, we spent Christmas afternoon in NYC. The weather was great and we took in a lot of sights. Our first stop was to check out the Barney’s Holiday Windows. Their there was environmental and one window was made entirely of recycled soda cans and bottles. You may not know, but Boar is a Pepsi Cola man and so that window was of particular interest.

We spent a few hours in the Central Park Zoo. We got there in time to watch the sea lions having lunch! When the girls were little, this zoo (along with the Aquarium and the Bronx Zoo) was always on our list of fun things to do over summer vacation.

You can also see pictures of the tree and the Penny Harvest. I hadn’t heard about the pennies and we happened upon it when we went to see the tree. It was awe inspiring – a true highlight of the trip.

ps. are you marveling at the photos? I got a new camera for Christmas!

Wall Street Vest

It has been too long between pictures around here! This is one full pattern repeat of the Wall Street Vest for Boar. It has become clear to me that there is NO way this will be done in time for Christmas. That’s okay though, I have plenty of other things with his name on them.

D#1 called with terrible news yesterday. A student was killed during a fight at an off campus party. You can read about it here. She was not at the party nor did she know the student personally. Alfred is a very small school though, with quite a ‘family’ feel to it and this is shocking and terribly upsetting. I feel badly for all the families involved. I will be so glad to have D#1 home this weekend.

I know I’m all for

Blogging Without Obligation

but it has been too long!!

Quickly – D#2 seems to be much improved. She is still not 100%, maybe more like 88%. The Dr. thinks it is a viral thing – lots of weird things going around here lately. Thank you for all your comments and concern! She is pretty much back to her regular schedule, just taking it easy when she feels she needs to (and sometimes when I feel she needs to).

A few of you asked what diet I was on that required a daily soak in a hot tub. Kay inspired me to give the Ultra Simple Diet a try. I also have the Ultra Metabolism book, but haven’t gotten to that yet. I just finished the first week and have to say that this program is working very well for me so far. And it does require a relaxing bath at the end of the day!! I have lost 6 pounds in the first week and an inch off my waist. The much better thing is that I feel great. In the past when I have lost weight, I don’t know if I could say that – at least not at the outset. I really feel terrific (didn’t realize that I wasn’t feeling terrific).

enough about that – I don’t want to jinx it!

how about some knitting chat? This yarn just arrived on my porch! I originally ordered it in gray but it was sadly out of stock. So I replaced it with the evergreen color. I am planning on knitting Boar the Wall Street Vest from the book Arans & Celtics: The Best of Knitter’s Magazine. Here is a Ravelry picture of the project. I have borrowed this book from my library, but am inclined to purchase a copy for my shelf. I am hoping to start a gauge swatch today and will finally have some knitting I can put on my blog since Boar never reads it.
